Commentary: A chance for New York to decrease emissions from air travel

Right now, transportation accounts for approximately a third of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., the largest share of any sector. The global aviation sector alone is responsible for 1 billion tons of emissions, 3% of the world’s total. At the root of the problem is airlines’ dependence on petroleum-based fuel options. Currently, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is the most promising lever to accelerate the airline industry on a path to net zero by 2050.

A Breath of Injustice: Demanding Clean Air for NYC’s Communities of Color Now

In New York City, our air is mired in inequality. This is a crisis that demands immediate and decisive action. For too long, communities of color have been suffocating under a cloud of vehicular pollution, inhaling 66% more pollutants than their white counterparts. Every day, children, the elderly, and families in communities of color are exposed to air that exacerbates asthma and lung conditions and even contributes to premature mortality.

Environmental Advocates, Business Groups, and Lawmakers Discuss How a Clean Fuel Standard Will Create a Cleaner Transportation Sector

The Clean Fuels NY coalition and NYLCV Education Fund hosted a forum about sustainable travel and the importance of creating a statewide clean fuel standard. With legislation to establish a clean fuel standard being a top priority for environmentalists this year, the forum sought to clarify aspects of the program and how it would complement New York’s recently passed Cap-and-Invest program.

Statement From Clean Fuels NY in Response to Governor Hochul's State of the State Address

In response to Governor Hochul’s State of the State address calling for a clean transportation standard study, the Clean Fuels NY coalition issued the following statement:

Transportation is one of the largest sources of climate and air pollution in our state. We appreciate Governor Kathy Hochul for advancing the conversation around the need for a clean fuel standard for transportation. However, the proposed Clean Transportation Study must not delay the passage of this important legislation, which has already been recommended by the Climate Action Council after considerable deliberation, passed by the State Senate with a bipartisan supermajority, collected nearly 100 Assembly members co-sponsoring the bill, and been included in the People's Budget of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus.

Long-standing clean fuels programs in California and Oregon offer an overwhelming amount of data that illustrates how a clean fuel standard successfully displaces greenhouse gases with little to no costs to consumers. In response, Oregon has made their initial goals more stringent and California has just proposed to do the same. Clean fuel standard programs are also underway in Washington State and Canada. The success of a clean fuel standard is well-documented as a tried and tested pathway toward cleaner air and transit. We must take action to curb emissions in the transportation sector now, especially in urban and disadvantaged communities burdened by tailpipe emissions, and we believe a clean fuel standard is a critical step forward that must be taken this year.

Durso and Cattell: A clean fuel standard would help New York’s workers

As we close in on the remainder of the legislative session it’s essential that New York’s elected officials focus on solutions to some of our state’s most pressing issues. On-road transportation accounts for 17% of total statewide emissions. Reducing our transportation system’s reliance on petroleum, and the climate and air pollution it produces, must be at the top of that list.
